At a recent Healthcare conference several companies shared examples of savings they realized after implementing various wellness programs:
Cisco: $37mil in reduced claims and avoid disability claims. 10:1 ROI after $10mil investement.
UPS: Saw a 3:1 ROI or $10k per employee per year after 4 years.
EMC: Saw a $1000 savings per individual that participated in a high blood pressure intervention program.
Diabetes costs $6k for those not engaged vs. companies who have high engagement programs.
Heart attack costs $100k per incident.
Stroke costs $300k per incident.
There is currently no standard ROI model. But, empirical evidence suggests that over time (estimated 3-5 years) a savings is realized in every company. Additionally, the greater the level of engagement and emphasis by the company, the greater the ROI.
The US Center for Disease Control and Prevention found that companies will realize an overall cost savings of between $3 and $6 for every $1 they invest in wellness programs. WELCOA has estimates as high $16 return on each $1 invested.
Investment Costs
Program costs fluctuate widely according to company size and program structure. The Wellness Council of America estimates the cost per employee to be between $100 and $150 per year for an effective wellness program that produces a return on investment of $300 to $450. A sample expenditure for various levels of programs include:
